Cass School District #63
English as a Second Language Learners
2005-2006 Screening and Assessment of English Language Learners

W-APT Screener
After a home language survey has indicated that a language other than English is spoken in the home, or by the student, Cass School District #63 will screen the student within 30 days for English language proficiency. The screening instrument that the District uses is the ACCESS screener (also know as the WIDA ACCESS Placement Test or W-APT). The primary purpose of the screener is for initial identification and placement of an English language learning student into the academic setting.

ACCESS Assessment
ACCESS for ELL is a standards-based, criterion referenced English language proficiency test designed to measure English language learners’ social and academic proficiency in English. It assesses social and instructional English as well as the language associated with language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies within the school context across the four language domains.

ACCESS Training Opportunity:
If you are interested in assisting with the ACCESS assessment and W-APT Screener that is now a state requirement for our ELL students, you need to obtain ACCESS Certification. To become certified, teachers need to complete an online test. Becoming familiar with the ACCESS assessment will also be beneficial to you as a teacher and an advocate of ELLs.

Before you can register at the WIDA site, you must first visit the Illinois Online Teacher Information System (OTIS) at http://www.isbe.net/otis/ and look up your Illinois Educator Identification Number (IEIN).  Without a valid IEIN you will not receive certification credit.

To register for the online assessment, visit https://db.wida.us/d2l/

Use the following to log in:
Username: illinois
Password: lincoln

Complete the information on the registration page. They will then send you username and password information to access the actual assessment to become certified. I think it takes up to one day to receive your specific username and password information. You can take the assessment as many times as needed to pass.
