Philosophy and Beliefs

We believe that the Reading program should include components, studies, and experiences that provide for:

• a common core of background knowledge and skills

• challenging students to make connections among self, world, and other texts

• examining literary and figurative devices through the study of fiction and non-fiction genres

• vocabulary development

• an awareness of and an appreciation for cultural diversity

• connecting reading to all subject areas and real life experiences

• a genuine interest in and appreciation of all kinds of literature

• appreciating individual development, identity, and diversity

• grade level proficient readers and writers in order to become independent life-long learners
