Philosophy and Beliefs

The Cass District 63 Science program provides a framework for students to become scientifically literate and to develop as problem solvers in a scientific and technological society.

We believe that science is best learned when students:

·        develop scientific understanding through discoveries, active involvement, and experiences

·        use current and emergent technology to promote scientific explorations and analytical thinking

·        engage in observation, data collection, problem solving, research, and decision making

·        analyze, synthesize, and evaluate information

·        are able to read and write about science

·        relate new experiences to prior learning

·        connect science with other subject areas

·        understand relevance of science in their lives

We believe that science is best learned when teachers:

·        nurture, encourage, and model curiosity

·        nurture, encourage and model environmental awareness

·        provide opportunities for scientific explorations

·        make science an enjoyable experience

·        model and encourage honesty in reporting data

·        promote co-operation, team work, and respect for the ideas of others

·        have on-going opportunities to update their knowledge and experience in science
