Communication is the WORD in fifth grade L.A.! Important channels of sending and receiving knowledge are explored in fifth grade Language Arts classes. We begin our learning with a basic review of sentence structure. Parts of speech help us to see that sentences are like a jigsaw puzzle, and when the words fit together, the whole picture appears. Writing is interspersed throughout the school year. Narrative essays covering various personal experiences, or the creation of a Native American myth helps students with this form of writing. Students also practice expository essays as well as persuasive. Listening is also a channel involved in communication. Each year I share three novels with the children: Me and Caleb, and the classic Cheaper by the Dozen, and its sequel Belles on their Toes. These novels give the students a chance to hear excellent writing and also learn how life was very different, but yet much the same back in the "good old days" of the 20th century. |

Social Studies in fifth grade starts with the Ice Age people and carries us through the historical story of the birth of our country and the American Revolution. My philosophy of teaching is "Laugh and Learn." If my students can gain knowledge and have a good giggle or guffaw in the process, our time together has been profitable. |
