      The 8th grade language arts program will provide a review of the basic concepts of grammar as well as introduce new and more complex concepts.  Several days a week, instruction will be focused on grammar.  The concepts taught during these lessons will then be reinforced through writing at other times during the week. 

      The 8th grade writing program covers a variety of genres.  This program introduces students to a wide array of writing styles and also teaches them the many crafts of creative writing. 

    One of the most important goals of this program is to prepare students for their high school English classes.  Therefore, students will be writing on a daily basis.  Reviewing process writing, which includes expository, narrative, and persuasive, throughout each quarter is one way we will  work to achieve this goal.   There will also be writing assignments that are cross-curricular with Literature.  In addition to process writing, the students are also introduced to a variety

of creative writing activities.  One favorite creative writing activity for these students is the holiday story each student writes for a 2nd grader at Concord Elementary.  This gives each student a chance to feel as if he or she has officially published a piece of his or her writing.

     Teaching our students to write effectively as well as creatively is our ultimate goal for the 8th graders.  As with everything else in life, though, success can only be achieved with hard work.  Work hard and enjoy writing!
