Mrs. Grand’s Philosophy Statement The Literature/Language Arts curriculum for eighth grade encompasses both reading and writing skills. It is designed to help prepare each student to realize his or her potential in our complex and ever-changing world. Essential to the effectiveness of the program is the belief that all language-based activities (reading, writing, speaking, and listening) are important and deserve equal emphasis in the development of the individual student. Students are encouraged to think critically and analytically through the study of diverse ideas and materials. A broad spectrum of both fiction and nonfiction literature is covered. Writing assignments explore creative and process techniques, giving students opportunities for originality as well as formulaic practice. Listening and speaking are also elements of classroom procedure. Activities include units of study in which spelling, note-taking, technology, grammar, usage, vocabulary, comprehension, analysis, composition, oral speaking, and discussion skills are integrated component parts throughout the program. The goal of each student should be to recognize the importance of effective communication, and each individual should strive to participate to the best of his or her ability. A wide variety of communication experiences, a continuity of course work throughout the curriculum, an opportunity for each student to participate at his or her optimum level, an understanding of the importance of language skills in daily life, and the fostering of a deeper appreciation of literature—these are the objectives in Mrs. Grand’s educational program.
