"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go."

                                                         - Dr. Seuss

Mrs. Moran teaches 5th-8th Remedial Reading and 7th grade Language Arts.  Reading fluency, word knowledge, spelling, and comprehension will be the focus in all Reading classes.  Many of the grade-level subjects will be integrated into the reading passages to help build background knowledge of those subjects.

The Reading classes will use a variety of tools, materials, and methods in order to build the students comprehension.  Graphic organizers are key.  There is a link to help explain a variety of organizers that will be used in readings and discussions.  Literature books, novels, and magazine articles will be the main sources the students will use for reading.   In addition, students will use ancillary materials as part of their learning.

Independent reading plays a major role in Reading/Literature.  It is important for the students to build their attention span, read for enjoyment, and expose themselves to a variety of different genres.  They are to bring an independent novel to class each day.  If they complete the assigned work before time allowed, they need to take out their novel and read.  Every Tuesday will be designated as independent reading days.  On this day, the students will be reading silently for the entire class period.  They will conference with the teacher, for a grade, to check for comprehension.  The conferences will be informal, it is just to make sure the student is reading and the chosen book is at their level.

Spelling will be taken from the passages they are reading at the time.  They will be given pre and post tests each week.  They need to define the words prior to the readings as well.  As we move along in the year, the students will learn to define the words using context clues, surrounding sentences that help define the given word.

Homework assignments are posted weekly on Mrs. Moran's homework hotline, (630) 972-7425.
