Mrs. Becker's Home Page

Welcome to Extended Day Kindergarten.  My name is Cindy Becker and I am the E.D.K. teacher.  The goal of this program is to provide activities which will enrich the kindergarten student's day.  It offers additional time to develop all the skills necessary to be successful in school.

Our day includes many activities.  Circle Time is when we explore our monthly learning themes.  We have class discussions about our social science or science Big Book readings.  We play educational games.  We explore current events through our Scholastic Readers.

During Project Time, the students create art projects, do journal writing, or complete activity sheets that relate to the theme being discussed.

The highlight of the day for the children is Discovery Time.  They have open access to explore materials in the room as they choose areas to play in.  They may read books in the Reading Rainforest, shop at the Marketplace, or eat at the Safari Snack Shop.  The Writing Area offers a place for students to design their own stationary and write letters.  They can even send them to the post office.  At the Science Center, children can explore magnets, create gear gadgets, connect funny bones, or view slides under a microscope.  Block Area hosts a variety of building materials like legos, tree blocks, people dominoes, and a medieval kingdom.

In Extended Day Kindergarten, we go on many learning adventures.  In the fall, we explore fabulous foilage, create a paper pumpkin patch, and go "batty" as we study bats.  Our classroom turns into a museum when we study Native American tribes and the students create Indian crafts.  In the winter, the children apply for their passports and make backpacks to prepare for a world tour to learn about holiday customs.  We explore dinosaur days.  We celebrate the 100th day of school. The students learn about the U.S. presidents and even the pets that have lived in the White House.  In the spring, we explore earth-wise ways as we celebrate Earth Day.  We explore the rainforest and its animals.  Finally, our classroom is transformed into an ocean habitat as we study ocean life.

This is just a peek at the many activities we do.  Extended Day Kindergarten is a memorable place to spend the school year!
