Welcome to Concord Elementary's Physical Education Department. The overall goal for the Concord P.E. Department is to help our students develop not only their physical skills, but social skills as well. Our philosophy for elementary P.E. is to expose the students to a wide variety of developmentally appropriate activities that aid in their physical and social development. As for physical skills, the emphasis will be on individual progress, especially with a child's physical fitness. As for social skills, the emphasis will be on developing listening skills, following school and gym rules, working with classmates, and developing good sportsmanship.
In kindergarten, the students explore movement through the use of balls, bean bags, scooters, hoops, jump ropes, a parachute, tumbling, exercises, and various games that incorporate different fundamental locomotor movements.
The first and second graders build on the previous year's activities. The students use the same equipment, but in more complex ways. New activities, games, and modified sport units are also introduced. In addition to these elements of the curriculum, students are exposed to physical fitness tests and training. This testing is used to create a baseline for students and allows us to track physical development throughout their time at Concord.
In the third and fourth grades, the emphasis is on developing correct body mechanics for different sport skills and learning more complex motor patterns. Sport units, physical fitness training and testing continue to play a large role in the curriculum.
We are very excited to be a part of the Concord community and enjoy watching the students grow and succeed throughout the year!
