We have integrated yoga into the Physical Education curriculum to improve the students’ balance, body awareness, strength, flexibility, and to teach relaxation techniques. Each year, the students at Concord help to raise money for the American Heart Association by participating in Jump Rope for Heart. With their outstanding effort in 2010, the school was able to raise over $4,600! This will help raise awareness of heart disease as well as help those with existing cardiovascular needs. The PE/Fine Arts team at Concord puts on an annual presentation to teach students about respecting others and how to solve their own problems. This year, the teachers provided examples of situations that may occur throughout the school day, including on the school bus, walking through the halls, at recess, and in class. Once again, the students and staff of Concord have gained recognition for their incredible generosity towards the American Heart Association. Through their hard work, the school community was able to exceed their previous donation to the Jump Rope for Heart program. In February, 2011, they raised over $6,100 to help fund research and advancement in the field of cardiovascular health. To read an article written about their efforts, click here.
This year, Concord introduced its first annual PE Field Days. Each grade level was given one full day to play physical education games and activities outside in a celebration of exercise and all the things that they learned throughout the school year.
