Language Arts

Welcome to 8th grade Language Arts and Writing. Throughout the year, students will be diligently working on improving their use of grammar in writing as well as working on improving their writing skills.  This year the 8th graders and I will be piloting a new program called The Writing Coach.  It is an interactive online writing/grammar program that looks promising!

The 8th grade Language Arts program will provide a review of the basic concepts of grammar as well as introduce new and more complex concepts.  Several days a week, instruction will be focused on grammar. The concepts taught during these lessons will then be reinforced through writing at other times during the week. The eighth grade writing program covers a variety of genres. This program introduces students to a wide array of writing styles and also teaches them the many crafts of creative writing.

One of the most important goals of this program is to prepare students for their future endeavors in writing. Therefore, students will be writing on a daily basis. Reviewing process writing, which includes expository, narrative, and persuasive, throughout each quarter is one way we will  work to achieve this goal. There will also be writing assignments that are cross-curricular with Literature and Social Science.

Teaching our students to write effectively as well as creatively is our ultimate goal for the eighth graders. As with everything else in life, though, success can only be achieved with hard work. Work hard and enjoy writing!

Word of the Week

Each week, 8th grade students will be introduced to a new vocabulary word, known as our Word of the Week.  This activity takes place every Monday, and students are required to keep these words in their binders.  As the year progresses and students begin working on their writing assignments, they will earn extra credit for each vocabulary word that is included in the essay if it is used correctly.  As Words of the Week are updated, a running list will be posted here.

What are we writing now?

As part of the 8th grade team's interdisciplinary unit about the Holocaust, our 8th graders visited the Holocaust Museum in Skokie.  Not only did they have an opportunity to view artifacts and videos regarding the Holocaust, but they also had the opportunity to hear a survivor speak.  This trip was a valuable experience for our students. Listening to the stories of survival during this horrific time was a special honor for our students.

To further enhance their knowledge of the Holocaust, students will learn about this time period in their social studies and literature classes, but they will also complete a research paper in their language arts classes.  We will begin working on this expository essay next week.  Students will utilize books, pamphlets, websites, movies, and documentaries to gather information about their topics.  Once the research has been compiled, they will apply the lessons that they have learned about exposition in order to organize this information into an essay.  We will also continue to apply the writing skills that we have been learning about in class as well as continue to discuss the importance of putting information into their own words.
