Board Briefs - December 16, 2025

The Board Briefs are highlights from the most recent Board of Education meetings. The purpose of the Board Briefs is to provide a timely summary to keep our staff, parents and public informed of the key items that were discussed or acted upon. More detailed information is available under the Board Schedules, Agendas and Minutes section of the District’s website. Official minutes are not posted until approval at the following meeting.

Appointment of Dr. Travis McGuire as the next Superintendent
After completing a comprehensive search, the Board of Education approved the appointment of Dr. Travis L. McGuire as the next Superintendent of Schools, effective July 1, 2026. Dr. McGuire will succeed Mr. Mark Cross, who is retiring next June after six years of dedicated service. Here is the formal announcement. Welcome, Dr. McGuire!

Approval of the 2025 Tax Levy
Mr. Cross reviewed with the Board the 2025 tax levy. The final recommended levy of $11,678,581 excluding debt service, compared to last year’s extension of $11,216,462 is an increase of 4.12 percent. The final amount of taxes on an individual property could be higher or lower and will depend on any changes in assessment of the individual property, as well as what other taxing bodies levy for taxes. Mr. Cross provides Questions and Answers about Local Property Taxes for anyone interested in learning more.

Phase III Facility Planning
Mr. Cross updated the Board on recent planning with the architects as it relates to Phase III facility plans. The Board is hoping to complete as much of the work as possible in the summer of 2026, including replacement of some flooring and lighting at Concord, and as well as the parking lot at Cass Junior High. Mr. Cross is working on a potential joint bid for the paving work with the City of Darien and also recommended this project for a $50,000 matching maintenance grant. Project design will continue with the architects, with the bidding process expected to take place early in 2026.
